While formally planned urban areas may have access to publicly funded sewerage systems, the poor and those living in slums and informal settlements are left behind with little or no support in Bangladesh. In those areas, infrastructure and services for safe containment, emptying, conveyance, treatment and disposal are largely absent. The proposed Bangladesh City Inclusive Sanitation Program in 25 Towns aims to increase access to inclusive urban sanitation services in selected cities of Bangladesh. Specifically, the investment project will: (i) improve sanitation infrastructure and services in informal areas of selected 25 cities; (ii) finance demonstration and dissemination of innovative sanitation solutions and hygiene practices; (iii) support formulation of the City-Wide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) plan and its implementation framework including capacity building activities.
The purpose of this Project Preparation Special Fund (PPSF) grant is to conduct preparatory activities to help prioritize investments within target municipalities, finalize important design features, and ensure implementation readiness of the project. Preparatory activities supported by the PPSF grant include, but are not limited to: (i) upgrading existing feasibility studies; (ii) preparing detailed engineering designs including tender documents; (iii) setting up an indicator and survey on gender and other vulnerable communities; (iv) setting up a community engagement system; and, (v) assessment of institutional and financial management capacity of the executing agency and project implementation units. The grant will also provide support to the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) to prepare all project reports and necessary preparatory works associated with the project.
The PPSF grant will be implemented by the DPHE.
