Chief Economist Erik Berglöf to Leave AIIB

Erik Berglöf will leave the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank after serving as the inaugural Chief Economist since September 1, 2020, to head up a new school of governance and public policy in Stockholm.

As Chief Economist, Berglöf led the Economics Department in enhancing AIIB’s economic analysis and thought leadership, bringing evidence and analytical rigor to the Bank’s operations and strategy.

Drawing on his international experience and extensive network, Berglöf has broadened AIIB’s engagement with policymakers, development institutions, academics and financial sector leaders. Under his leadership, the Economics Department has further developed its research including the Bank’s flagship report, the Asian Infrastructure Finance Report, and championed an expansive understanding of infrastructure investment, including nature as infrastructure and infrastructure for planetary health.

“Erik’s intellectual rigor and global perspective have made an important contribution to AIIB,” said Zou Jiayi, AIIB President and Chair of the Board of Directors. “Through his leadership of the Economics Department, he helped strengthen the Bank’s voice and its intellectual contribution to sustainable infrastructure development. On behalf of the Bank, I thank Erik for his distinguished service and wish him well.”

“It has been a privilege to serve as AIIB’s Chief Economist during such a formative period for the Bank,” Berglöf said. “I am proud of the department we have built and grateful to the colleagues whose expertise, commitment and collaboration have shaped its progress. AIIB has an important role to play in advancing sustainable infrastructure as a driver of growth and resilience, and I leave with strong confidence in the Bank’s future.”
