Fiji, a small island developing state, is significantly vulnerable to climate risks due to limited access to finance and substantial climate adaptation needs. Its rural areas are significantly exposed to climate change impacts, in part due to historical underinvestment in infrastructure development and climate proofing. An AIIB-financed diagnostic study confirmed the high vulnerability of Fiji’s rural infrastructure to climate change impacts.
The Project Preparation Special Fund (PPSF) grant will support the Government of Fiji on project preparation activities for to prepare the Strengthening Climate Resilience of Rural Infrastructure Project (SCRIP). The Project will include civil works to construct, rehabilitate and climate-proof rural roads and water and sanitation infrastructure; implementation support and project management; and institutional strengthening and capacity building focused on climate resilience infrastructure.
The PPSF grant will support preparatory activities to enhance project implementation readiness, including finalizing the project scope; conducting feasibility studies for all the selected rural roads and rural water and sanitation infrastructure to be funded by SCRIP; detailed engineering designs for the first tranche of rural roads and rural water and sanitation interventions to be supported by SCRIP.
The implementing entities for the PPSF grant are the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) and the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF), both under the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport (MPWMST), with close support from AIIB.
