AIIB Achieves ISO 20121 Certification for Sustainable Event Management of 10th Annual Meeting

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has achieved the international standard for event sustainability, ISO 20121, for the planning and delivery of its 10th Annual Meeting of Board of Governors held in Beijing in June 2025, according to the British Standards Institution (BSI).

The certification recognizes AIIB’s efforts to responsibly manage the environmental, social and economic impacts of its annual meeting. As climate change continues to pose significant challenges to sustainable growth and prosperity, AIIB remains committed to supporting its members in advancing mitigation, adaptation and the transition to a low-carbon economy while also integrating sustainability into its own operations.

“Since 2019, AIIB has advanced green and low-carbon practices in its annual meetings through the Act Green Together initiative. Achieving ISO 20121 builds on these efforts by expanding our focus to broader environmental, social, and economic impacts,” said Hua Tian, Acting Vice President and Corporate Secretary of AIIB.

This milestone was made possible through cross-departmental efforts, including gap analyses, trainings and the establishment of a Sustainable Event Management Framework together with a comprehensive implementation strategy.

“These efforts ensured that all functional areas were included, and meaningful sustainability objectives and targets were embedded across event operations,” said Guorong Ding, Director General of the Facilities, Administrative and Services Department of AIIB. “Initiatives included continuously offsetting the annual meeting’s carbon emissions, encouraging sustainable travel and commuting, optimizing energy efficiency at the venue, improving waste management, and enhancing security, emergency preparedness, data privacy, supply chain management and participant engagement.”

Tatiana Schmollack-Tarasova, Managing Director of BSI Greater China, said: “On behalf of BSI, I am delighted to extend our heartfelt congratulations to the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank on achieving the ISO 20121 certification. This accomplishment reflects AIIB’s commitment to sustainable and responsible event management, setting a benchmark for other institutions in the region and beyond.”

ISO 20121 is an international standard for sustainable event management and provides the Bank with a framework and guidance to minimize environmental impact, enhance social responsibility and improve economic efficiency throughout the event lifecycle.
