The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has invested USD100 million in a green bond issued by DenizBank A.Ş. to support Türkiye’s climate mitigation efforts. The financing will target renewable energy, energy efficiency, emission reduction, water efficiency and sustainable transportation by private sector borrowers.
The investment has been made through a private placement under DenizBank’s Euro Medium-Term Notes program. The five-year green bond is aligned with the International Capital Market Association Green Bond Principles, and proceeds will finance climate-aligned infrastructure projects in line with DenizBank’s Sustainable Finance Framework.
“This transaction marks AIIB’s first financial institution project with DenizBank and our first engagement with a UAE banking group, Emirates NBD, one of the Middle East’s leading banking institutions,” said Gregory Liu, Director General, Financial Institutions and Funds (Global) Clients, AIIB. “This green bond investment underscores the importance of green finance in scaling climate action while highlighting AIIB’s growing role in fostering cross-regional financial partnerships across Türkiye and the MENA region to support the transition to a low-carbon economy.”
DenizBank’s CEO Recep Baştuğ commented on the transaction as follows: “This inaugural transaction with AIIB contributes to supporting climate-friendly investments in Türkiye, while marking the latest in our Bank’s green bond issuances with five different international development and investment banks, which have reached a total of USD470 million. Looking ahead, we aim to deepen our cooperation and jointly explore new opportunities for sustainable projects.”
The project is aligned with AIIB’s thematic priority of green financing, and supports Türkiye’s commitments under the Paris Agreement, as well as the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 6 (Clean water and sanitation), Goal 7 (Affordable and clean energy) and Goal 13 (Climate action).
